How to Care for Your Fresh Flower Bouquet at Home

How to Care for Your Fresh Flower Bouquet at Home

A love note to help your blooms last longer

There’s nothing quite like bringing fresh flowers home—the soft petals, the scent, the feeling that someone thought of you (or that you treated yourself, which we fully support). With a little care, your bouquet or arrangement can stay beautiful for days to come.

Here’s how to give your flowers the love they deserve.

First Things First: Unwrap with Care

Once you’re home, gently remove any outer wrapping or paper. Your flowers have just traveled and are ready to breathe.

If your bouquet came tied, you can leave it tied for now—just make sure the stems are free once they’re in water.

Trim the Stems

Using clean scissors or floral shears, trim about ½–1 inch off the bottom of each stem at a slight angle.

Why it matters:

Fresh cuts help flowers drink water more easily, keeping them hydrated and happy.

Tip: Avoid cutting stems straight across, and never use dull scissors—they can crush the stems.

Use Clean Water + Flower Food

Fill a clean vase with room-temperature water and add the flower food provided.

If you don’t have flower food:

  • Change the water daily
  • Keep the vase very clean

Fresh water is one of the most important steps in extending the life of your flowers.

Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Any leaves sitting in water will break down quickly and create bacteria.

Before placing flowers in the vase, remove any foliage that would fall below the waterline. Your flowers will thank you.

Choose the Right Spot

Flowers love light—but not too much.

Best placement

  • Bright, indirect light
  • Cool room temperature

Avoid

  • Near heaters or vents
  • On top of appliances
  • Close to ripening fruit (it releases gases that shorten flower life)

Refresh Every 1–2 Days

To keep your bouquet looking its best:

  • Change the water every 1–2 days
  • Rinse the vase
  • Re-cut stems if possible

This small ritual makes a big difference.

A Note on Natural Beauty

Flowers are living things, and each bloom has its own lifespan. Some flowers may fade sooner than others, and that’s completely natural. Think of it as part of their story—beautiful, fleeting, and meant to be enjoyed in the moment.
